Jonathan Kozol on Kids Who Survive Inner City

An NPR interview with one my favorite authors.  His book "Savage Inequalities", was my initial eye opener as to the social disparities plaguing our poor, inner-city schools.  The descriptions of the inequalities between the education the poor and rich receive are clear and how our political and social structures uphold this are well described.

  1. Thank you for sharing that Rosa! I thought the questions about the gender difference was very insightful. I was wondering why the girls seemed to persist and adapt but the boys couldn't. I wonder if it is because of the more discrimination that they faced and the less support they receive to get over it? People always tell little boys to "man up" and just get over their feelings. They never really get to express them.

  2. Rosa, your post reminded me of this Jay-Z song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8qGMMmcs9o
The chorus says: "Yeah, I am not poison, no I am not poison
Just a boy from the hood that
Got my hands in the air
    In despair don't shoot
I just wanna do good, ah"
